How to Train Someone

Draw a horizontal line with an arrow.
Write the words “You Do, They Watch” along the arrow.
Explain this step: people learn by watching you. Discuss with them what you do and why you do it.

Write the words “You Do, They Help” along the arrow.
Explain this step: prepare with them in advance and involve them in what you are doing. Debrief with them afterward.

Explain this step: when they have developed some competency, let them lead as you help them.

Write the words “They Do, You Watch” along the arrow.
Explain this step: when they are ready, turn them loose to lead. Observe what they do and provide encouragement and helpful input.
