How to Have Maximum Kingdom Impact

Character is who we are. Competence is what we can do. Being effective as a disciple and leader requires growing in BOTH areas. Take some time to reflect on and discuss your growth in these two areas:

Draw:

A box and divide it into four squares. Write “character” at the top and “competence” on the side, with both “low” and “high” being represented.

Explain:

Discuss what happens when someone is trying to serve the Lord in each of these four instances.

  • High competence but low character = a dangerous disciple/leader who needs to be held accountable.
  • High character but low competence = an emerging disciple/leader who needs to develop skills.
  • Low character and low competence = a disqualified disciple/leader who needs accountability and opportunities to learn.
  • High character and high competence = an effective, impactful disciple/leader who needs to multiply him/herself in others.

Competency + Character = Kingdom Impact

“And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them” (Psalm 78:72).

Discuss:

  1. What character qualities would you like to grow in? For example, love for God, love for others, humility, integrity, servant spirit, teachability, responsibility, patience, persistence.
  2. What skills would you like to develop as a leader or in your ministry area?
