How to Debrief a Leader

Luke 9 tells the story of Jesus sending out the disciples to do ministry without him. When they return, he took them away on a sort of retreat, and he listened to them tell of the healings and teachings that took place. Jesus “debriefed” with his disciples, setting an example for us to follow.

Experience is a great teacher when we take time to evaluate it. Each week you and your team are a part of meetings, services and events.

Why not take a little extra time afterwards to debrief the experience and see what you can learn together?

Here are some questions you can use to follow up after a ministry experience:

  • What can we learn from what we did well?
  • In what area or areas did we struggle most?
  • If we could do it all over again what would we do different? Why?
  • How can we improve our teamwork?
  • How could we improve our systems?
  • How could we improve our communication?
  • What did you learn about yourself, others, or God during this experience?
